  • A student and a teacher died, and dozens of others were injured, after a school bus collided with a dump truck on a New Jersey highway on Thursday.
  • Photos from the scene show the mangled school bus lying overturned near the exit, with its undercarriage appearing to be ripped away.

One student and one teacher were killed on Thursday after a school bus full of fifth graders collided with a dump truck on a New Jersey highway, Gov. Phil Murphy said at a news conference.

There were 38 students and seven adults aboard the bus when it crashed, and more than 40 of them were injured and taken to hospital, though their conditions remain unclear, Murphy said.

The crash left the twisted wreckage of the school bus lying on the roadside near Mount Olive Township, with its undercarriage and front cab nearly completely torn off.

The students on the bus were from East Brook Middle School in Paramus, and they had been en route to a field trip to Waterloo Village, the Paramus Police Department said in a statement.

One student, Theo Ancevski, told the Associated Press he was sitting in the fourth row of the bus when he "heard a scraping sound and we toppled over the highway." He was treated for cuts and scrapes at a nearby hospital.

"A lot of people were screaming and hanging from their seatbelts," he said.

The mayor of Mount Olive, Rob Greenbaum, told Northjersey.com he was watching the rescue efforts from a nearby overpass, calling it a "horrific scene" and describing the bus as "mangled."

The Mount Olive police tweeted that traffic was being diverted off Route 80 at Exit 26, and to expect heavy traffic and delays along Route 46.
